The documentary was awesome. To my surprise, I was in it quite a bit. Most of it took place in my first session at camp in 2004. They interviewed me several times, on subjects like... Have I ever seen any Shakespeare before? My answer: "Yeah, I saw the Mel Gibson 'Hamlet'... I hated that." There's also a good bit where a guy named Chaille said that he really wanted the part of Malvolio in Twelfth Night, which I ended up getting, despite not knowing the part. Later in the doc, when our parts where announced, I said "Well, I feel kinda bad, because I got the part that Chaille wanted..." and he said "Don't worry about it, man, I got a good part. You'll do awesome." The postscript is that Chaille turned out to be a dick. What's sad is that in 2005, he got better, but we all hated him anyway. Plus he spread a lot of crap about my performance the previous year, which I thought was really funny, because Mary Lynne told me he talked about "the guy who played Malvolio last year" as if I wasn't at the camp and as if people didn't know who I had played the year before, even though about five people at camp besides me had been at that session where I played Malvolio. That sentence was insanely huge. Anyway, I have no qualms with the guy for trashing my acting ability, but if you have a problem with me, tell me, don't cop out behind "the guy who played Malvolio last year". Sorry, I haven't shared that on this blog before, figured it was the appropriate time. Anyway. There's also maybe fifteen random shots of me. It was really cool. The whole documentary gave me a very nostalgic feeling. I can't wait to go back. That camp is more important to me than Northwood Highschool will ever be (no offense, guys). Eli, just imagine how you feel about your ensemble, and you'll understand. You get to see them every day though. Can you imagine only seeing them three weeks a year? When I first went to that camp, I obviously didn't know anyone, and no one knew anyone else, either, except for those who had been there before (just a few). Over three weeks though, they become like family. I remember each and every single one of them from 2004 and 2005. I miss them all. I miss home.

I feel a little better today. Here's what I did: -Woke up. -Watched two episodes of "Deadwood". -Played "Mario Kart DS". -Got online and did whatever it is I do here. Exciting. I've been questioning the concept of originality lately. Is any idea truly original? Isn't everything inspired by something else? If so, what inspired those something elses? Not that I have a problem with that. I mean, hey, Shakespeare stole, and it'd be one helluva bold statement to say that we're better than Shakespeare. I'm gonna rent some movies on Wednesday, but I'm not sure what yet. There's one movie that Eli really wants me to rent, "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". It's apparently incredibly disturbing. Just what I need. Here's what else I'm probably gonna rent... -"Heat" - The fantastic crime movie that Michael Mann made in 1995. Much better than "Collateral", IMHO. -"Swingers" - This is Vince Vaughn before "Wedding Crashers", and I personally enjoy him in this more than in the latter. -"The Frighteners" - Peter Jackson's horror/comedy that was made before "The Lord of the Rings". It's one of the most fun movies I've ever seen. Don't stress - relax. Let life roll of your backs. Except for death and paying taxes, everything in life is only for now.

Wow. I have been amazingly stressed out this week. My Marketing and Biology exams are on Tuesday, and I've been working hard for both of them. Mrs. Cottle gave us three huge study packets for the exam. If we complete each one, she'll add 3% of the exam grade we get onto the exam grade. Does that make sense? Meh, whatever. Not to mention a 250 question packet for Mrs. Hawkins. Today was Freshman Day. The way it goes is that every Friday the 13th is Freshman Day, where Freshmen are tormented (physically) by upperclassman. So the Freshbabies walk around with scared looks on their faces. It's a treat because scared Freshmen are fun. No one actually does anything to them. I just realized that I forgot to go see "Friday the 13th" at the Carolina theatre tonight. Damn... I was planning on it. Meh. I'm watching "Big Fish" instead. Makes me cry. "Big Fish", not missing "Friday the 13". Tommorow I might see "Good Night, and Good Luck" with Dad. It all depends. If so, expect the review for that on either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Guess what? On Sunday, Dad and I are driving to Staunton, VA where my Shakespeare camp is located. The world premiere of a documentary about the camp is going to screen. I was interviewed by the filmmakers (two of the first friends I made at that camp) about three times, so I might see myself on the big screen. I kinda hope that doesn't happen, because it was a year and a half ago, and I would like to not hear what my voice sounds like, or the kinds of things that I said back when I was a wee lad of fourteen. (Okay, I was never really a "wee lad", but you know what I mean.) Should be exciting. Lately I've been contemplating the meaning of favorites. For example: movies. I've made lists of my top ten favorite movies before, and I've always listed movies I thought were perfect. But lately, I've been realizing that a favorite movie should be something you can watch over and over and over and not get bored with. Thus, me listing "The Usual Suspects", which I've seen twice, as my favorite movie shouldn't count. It'll require at least three more viewings before I can determine how much I prefer it over movies I can watch multiple times. By the way, I did write that list, and here's what I came up with. It's not in order. -"The Big Lebowski" -"The Muppet Movie" -"Bubba Ho-tep" -"Untitled" ("Almost Famous" Director's Cut) -"Pulp Fiction" -"King Kong" (1933) -"Rent" -"Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" -"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (Disney version) -"Chasing Amy" There are a number of cool DVDs coming out in the next few months. I have a $30 gift certificate for Barnes & Noble, a $20 for Target, and $20 for Best Buy. I plan on using those for these DVDs. -"Ultimate Avengers: The Movie" (2/21) -"Rent" (2/21) -"The Wild Bunch: 2-Disc Director's Cut" Since I'm listing DVDs, here are ones I hope to buy in the near future (probably with birthday money... 3/22, everyone). -"Jarhead: 2-Disc Director's Edition" -"Robot Chicken: Season One" I also recently realized that I'm out of the "Sin City" loop. I kind of forgot about the 2-Disc DVD, and I'm not too un-psyched about not owning it yet. I guess as August and "Sin City 2" near, I'll get more into it. This entry was probably too long. I'm depressed. Don't forget to hug every black person you know on Monday. mood: depressed music: There's somethin' irresistible-ish about 'em. |

I couldn't decide what to do with today's entry, then I decided to post some of the quotes from the book I got for Christmas, "It's Not Easy Being Green: And Other Things to Consider". It's full of quotes from the various Henson works, songs, quotes from friends of Jim Henson, and quotes from Jim Henson himself. I feel better just by reading some of these. I hope it can do the same for you. "The words say 'It's not easy being green,' but the song is about knowing who you are. And in it you hear Jim's message most clearly. He believed that people are good and that they want to do their best and that no matter how or why we might be different from anybody else, we should learn to love who we are and be proud of it." -Ray Charles "Listening is the first step and the last step." -Cantus Fraggle "Simple is good." -Jim "If just one person believes in you Deep enough and strong enough Believes in you hard enough and long enough Before you knew it, someone would think 'If he can do it, I can do it' Making it two Two whole people who believe in you And maybe even you can believe in you too." -Robin the Frog "It's in every one of us to be wise Find your heart, open up both your eyes We can all know everything Without ever knowing why It's in every one of us by and by." -John Denver and the Muppets "We see with our eyes. We know with our hearts. Outside... inside." -Cantus Fraggle "One of the nice things about puppets is that it's your own hand in there. You can make it do anything you want it to." -Jim "I guess I was wrong when I said I never promised anyone. I promised me." -Kermit "Look at all those people out there. Lots of people. But my friends... they're all gone. Well, I'm gonna get 'em back. Because the show's not dead as long as I believe in it! And I'm gonna sell that show, and we're gonna be on Broadway. Because I'm not giving up. Hear that, New York? The frog's staying." -Kermit "Anybody's lover, anybody's brother I wanna be your lifetime friend Crazy as a rocket, nothing in my pocket I keep it at the rainbow's end I never think of money, I think of milk and honey Grinnin' the the Cheshire cat I focus on the pleasure, something I can treasure Can you picture that? Fact is, there's nothing out there you can't do Yeah, even Santa Claus believes in you Beat down the walls Begin, believe, behold, begat Be a better drummer, be an up-an'-comer Can you picture that?" -Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem "I love my work, and because I enjoy it, it doesn't really feel like work. Thus I spend most of my time working. I like working collaberatively with people. At its best, the film world functions creatively this way. I have a terrific group of people who work with me, and I think of the work that we do as 'our' work." -Jim -"Yeah, well, I've got a dream too. But it's about singing and dancing and making people happy. That's the kinda dream that gets better the more people you share it with. And, well, I've found a whole bunch of friends who have the same dream. And it kind of makes us like a family." -Kermit "Jim was the one who uncorked the bottle. He also not only uncorked it, he shook it up." -Frank Oz "Here's some simple advice: Always be yourself. Never take yourself too seriously. And beware of advice from experts, pigs, and members of Parliament." -Kermit "Yes, it's one of he basic truths of the physical universe. Things don't disappear. They just change, and change, and change again." -Doc from "Fraggle Rock" "Life's like a movie, write your own ending Keep believing, keep pretending We've done just what we set out to do Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you" -Kermit and the Muppets mood: happy |

Review: "Capote" This is a movie that I saw for one reason, and his name is Philip Seymour Hoffman. He's one of the greatest character actors working today. He's been in "Almost Famous", "Along Came Polly", "Patch Adams", "The Big Lebowski", and all of Paul Thomas Anderson's movies, including "Hard Eight", "Boogie Nights", "Magnolia", and "Punch Drunk Love". He was also in the recent mini-series, "Empire Falls". He's never played the same character twice, and he's a joy to watch. In "Capote", he delivers a fantastic performance unlike anything he's ever done. In all honesty, before I heard about this movie, I had no idea who Truman Capote (cah-po-tee) was. When I heard that Philip Seymour Hoffman was to star in a movie about Capote, I decided to learn as much as I could about him. I read his book "Breakfast at Tiffany's", which was a very good read. I haven't gotten around to reading "In Cold Blood", the book that Capote writes in this movie, but I want to find a copy. And to determine how accurate Hoffman's performance was, I watched old taped interviews that my aunt had of Capote (she's a big fan of his). Philip Seymour Hoffman doesn't portray Truman Capote, he inhabits him in the same way Jamie Foxx did with Ray Charles in "Ray" last year. The unique voice was dead on. Capote always had his eyes squinted, as if he were always analyzing things closely, and Hoffman does the same thing here. Even with his eyes squinted, he still shows every emotion, from happy, to sad, to shocked, to scared, to amused. Finally, something that was unique about Capote was the way he held a glass. That seems like an odd mannerism, but it wouldn't be an accurate performance is Capote didn't have a glass in his hand. It's not just about the physical characteristics, though. In order to become another human being, you've got to feel what they feel, and it's apparent that Philip Seymour Hoffman does this. When Capote makes the choices that he does, Hoffman is making those choices right along with him. Truman Capote was a unique person, and I can truthfully say that no one could play him as accurate as Philip Seymour Hoffman does. The rest of the cast is great, too. Catherine Keener plays Capote's childhood friend Harper Lee, the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird", one of the best books ever written. She's actually not in the movie all that long, and doesn't have a huge impact on what happens. Still, she's really good. Not as good as she was in "Being John Malkovich", though. The real supporting star is Clifton Collins Jr. He plays one of the two killers that Capote interviews in the movie. Nearly half of the stuff in the movie is the two of them talking. That sounds boring, but it's not. Collins Jr. plays a character that you don't want to sympathize with, but you do anyway, despite the fact that he brutally murdered an entire family. It's a shame, because in all the reviews I've read of "Capote", no one mentions this guy, and he's fantastic. There's also a small role played by veteran actor Chris Cooper. Jesus, how many movies have I seen him in lately? I swear, the guy is the next Christopher Walken. Anyway, he's good here. The movie was directed by Bennett Miller, and the last (and only other) thing he directed was "The Cruise", a documentary about double decker buses or something. Um, okay. It doesn't sound very interesting. Still, he did a good job with "Capote". The visuals were cool, but at times, it seems like it was directed by two different people. The camera is calm and still one minute, the next it's wobbly and moving around a lot. It didn't distract, though. I'd like to rate this movie a little higher, but the truth is, it drags. It's an hour and forty minutes, but it feels longer, and I think a part of that comes from a lot of unnecessary footage. The reason I like the movie is because it's full of great acting. Every performance, big and small, is excellent. Review: 8 out of 10

Using my GameStop gift card, I bought "Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble" for my DS, and "Serenity" and "Pulp Fiction" on UMD for my PSP. Here are my thoughts. VJ - I've always loved this series, ever since the first one in 2003. For the DS, they got rid of some of the older powers, like speed up, and the new ones are... kinda retarded and hard to use. That's not to say it isn't fun. It makes doing the puzzles much more interesting. Nice use of the touch screen. I now have "Mario Kart DS" and this... I wanted to buy "Animal Crossing: Wild World", but it was gone. I honestly considered buying "Nintendogs: Labrador & Friends", but opted instead for the two movies. "Serenity" and "Pulp Fiction" - I love the fact that the PSP will play movies, because my bus rides in the morning and afternoon are so damn long. I've decided to start a UMD collection (a small one) of movies I won't get tired of that I can watch to and from school. Next on my list - "Time Bandits" and "Labyrinth". Does anyone find it weird that I put movies, books, video games, songs, CDs, et cetera into quotations? Oh well.

Red: [narrating] I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free. That comes from "The Shawshank Redemption", which, to me, is probably the greatest movie of all-time. It isn't necessarily my favorite movie, but it's one of them. The character of Red, played by Morgan Freeman, delivers a wonderful speech here. Watching this the other day got me thinking. Are there any songs you feel this way about? Now, I couldn't possibly think of a song that's as beautiful to me as that one was to Red. But I can come close. I don't know if any of you are familiar with him, but there's a composer/Christian singer by the name of Michael W. Smith. A while back, he released an instrumental album called "Freedom". I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it was apparently a film score he wrote, and it was shelved. I have no idea what movie it was gonna be for. Anyway, he decided to release the album anyway. The theme behind the album is supposed to be inspiration, but it's so much more than that. There's a richness, passion, and splendor in the songs that is unmatched by any vocal recordings. I've found myself thinking many times that were these songs to have lyrics and singers, it would lose all meaning. The CD starts off with a triumphant theme, slips into depression, and ends with a sound that can only be described as bittersweet. It's like at the beginning of the album, there's a person, and he/she is looking for something that they're missing, but they aren't unoptimistic. In the middle, it looks like all hope is lost. In the end, things just aren't as he/she envisioned they would be, but that doesn't mean they're unhappy. To me, the album is like so many Broadway shows... looking for something you feel you need to be happy, and in the end, discovering you had something better all along. That's my take.

Well, unfortunately, one of the greatest comedians of all-time, Richard Pryor, had died today. It's an incredibly unfortunate event, but was only expected, as he's had health problems. Wherever he is, I hope he's chillaxing.
"By telling the truth about his pain, Richard Pryor held a mirror up to society, and we were able to see our fears, our beauty, our prejudice, our wretchedness, our hopes, our dreams... all of our contradictions. What other man has no secrets?" - Damon Wayans.

A lot has been said about how to prevent rape. Women should learn self-defense. Women should lock themselves in their houses after dark. Women shouldn't have long hair and women shouldn't wear short skirts. Women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. Fuck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all. Instead of that bullshit, how about: if a woman is drunk, don't rape her. if a woman is walking alone at night, don't rape her. if a women is drugged and unconscious, don't rape her. if a woman is wearing a short skirt, don't rape her. if a woman is jogging in a park at 5 am, don't rape her. if a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you're still hung up on, don't rape her. if a woman is asleep in her bed, don't rape her. if a woman is asleep in your bed, don't rape her. if a woman is doing her laundry, don't rape her. if a woman is in a coma, don't rape her. if a woman changes her mind in the middle of or about a particular activity, don't rape her. if a woman has repeatedly refused a certain activity, don't rape her. if a woman is not yet a woman, but a child, don't rape her. if your girlfriend or wife is not in the mood, don't rape her. if your step-daughter is watching tv, don't rape her. if you break into a house and find a woman there, don't rape her. if your friend thinks it's okay to rape someone, tell him it's not, and that he's not your friend. if your "friend" tells you he raped someone, report him to the police. if your frat-brother or another guy at the party tells you there's an unconscious woman upstairs and it's your turn, don't rape her, call the police and tell the guy he's a rapist. tell your sons, god-sons, nephews, grandsons, sons of friends it's not okay to rape someone. don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape. don't imply that she could have avoided it if she'd only done/not done x. don't imply that it's in any way her fault. don't let silence imply agreement when someone tells you he "got some" with the drunk girl. don't perpetuate a culture that tells you that you have no control over or responsibility for your actions. You can, too, help yourself. If you agree, re-post it. It's that important. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Didn't expect this at all, did you, children? mood: spastic music: RENT - I'll Cover You Reprise |

I'm watching this really, really bad movie. Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. Wow, is it bad. It sucks way too much. It should cease to exist. A lot. I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with LJ titles, and I don't want to just forget about them. So every once in awhile, you'll get shit like Tumblebiscuits. mood: Meh music: Angel Theme Song |
